Canadians, newcomers and people worldwide celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8.

The month of March is recognized as Women’s History Month.

This year, the special theme for the day and month honouring the economic, social, political and cultural achievements of women is “Inspire Inclusion.”

The first International Women’s Day (#IWD) was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. More than a million women (and men) attended public gatherings to show their support.

A day of global activism

Soon, other countries began to observe and celebrate International Women’s Day. In 1975, the United Nations named 1975 as International Women’s Year and March 8 as the official International Women’s Day.

Over the years, March 8 has become a day of collective global activism and celebration shared by all those committed to forging women’s equality.

Anabella Hatami of Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST), told Prepare for Canada that “with the theme “#InspireInclusion,” we are reminded of the importance of embracing diversity and promoting inclusion across all sectors of society.”

“It is a call to action for each of us to actively engage in breaking down the barriers that hinder women’s progress,” said Hatami, “particularly for those who are just beginning their lives anew in Canada.”

Skills and training for visible minority women

WEST of Windsor began in 1984 as a non-profit corporation and registered charitable organization in response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment among women and the difficulties women met trying to enter the workforce.

As noted on their website, during West of Windsor’s evolution, “it became apparent that the most disadvantaged women, in terms of training and employment opportunities, were visible minorities. As a result of those findings, a plan was implemented to create a technical and life skills training program specific to the needs of visible minority women residing in Windsor-Essex. WEST, a non-profit corporation and registered charitable organization, is the realization of that initiative.”

Since the pandemic started, Canada has seen record population growth, with half of it women. Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced in November of 2023 that Canada remains committed to settling 485,000 newcomers in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025.

[cjtoolbox name=’Drake p3 Assessment’]

Immigrant women driving the labour market

According to Statistics Canada, in 2022 there were 4,200,630 immigrant women in the country’s labour market. The data also revealed that 2.9 million were visible minorities (1.3 million were not). Newcomers continue to comprise just about 100 percent of Canada’s labour force growth and 75 percent of the country’s population growth.

In Canada, women have an 83 percent participation rate in the national workforce. That’s risen from just over 30 percent in 1976, when only half of the women worked outside the home.

According to StatsCan, the male national labour market participation rate is about 92 percent.

Hatami says West of Windsor takes the theme of #inspireinclusion to heart. It works to serve newcomer women and girls facing the challenges of a new home and overcoming gender-based barriers.

“Our mission is to provide these women with the tools, resources, and support they need to realize their full potential,” said Hatami. “By focusing on education and employment opportunities, we aim to empower them to build sustainable and fulfilling lives for themselves and their families.”

Promoting diversity in leadership

As one International Women’s Day website states, “To truly include women means to openly embrace their diversity of race, age, ability, faith, body image, and how they identify. Worldwide, women must be included in all fields of endeavour.”

“One of the key pillars of Inspire Inclusion is the promotion of diversity in leadership and decision-making positions. Women, especially those belonging to underrepresented groups, continue to face barriers when seeking leadership roles. By championing inclusion, organizations and communities can harness the full potential of diverse perspectives, leading to better decision-making and innovation.”

It is about understanding the unique challenges faced by newcomer women and creating pathways for their success and leadership in our communities

– Anabella Hatami, West of Windsor

“Education and awareness play vital roles in fostering inclusion and empowering women. Through initiatives such as mentorship programs, educational workshops, and advocacy campaigns, individuals and organizations can create opportunities for women to thrive. By providing support and resources, women can be empowered to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.”

Continuous commitment is required

For Hatami and West of Windsor, the importance of International Women’s Day and the theme of #inspireinclusion represents much more than a single day of recognition and celebration. It’s a “continuous commitment to fostering an environment where women’s contributions are valued and their voices are heard.”

“It is about understanding the unique challenges faced by newcomer women and creating pathways for their success and leadership in our communities,” she said. “Through our collective efforts, we can inspire inclusion and ensure that every woman has the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of life.”

A large crowd is gathered to watch the Canada Day fireworks display on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Canada Day 2023 will celebrate the country's 156th birthday.
A large crowd gathers each year on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario to celebrate Canada Day!

Every year, Canadians start their summer by celebrating Canada Day on July 1. The holiday marks the anniversary of Confederation, the event that created Canada. It’s a nationwide holiday that brings Canadians from all over the country together to celebrate. People get together and celebrate all the wonderful things this country offers. Canada Day, 2023, will mark Canada’s 156th birthday.

This year, Canada’s population will surpass 40 million and a large part of the country’s growth is due to international migration. That’s a great testament to the appeal of Canada as an attractive place for newcomers. And, for newcomers, Canada Day is a great time to join the celebration and learn even more about your new home!

Before Canada

It’s mind-boggling how young Canada is in the grand scheme of things. Just two centuries ago, our beloved country didn’t even exist. Instead, the land that is now Canada was a big jumble of territories known as British North America. It consisted of British colonies, a vast stretch known as Rupert’s Land, and was largely uninhabited. In the South, the United States had already united to form a country. Many people at the time thought it was looking to expand north. The leaders of that time started to realize that it might be better to unite into one country rather than face external threats alone. Leaders such as Sir John A. Macdonald, George Brown, and Sir George-Étienne Cartier all got together to discuss the idea of a possible union.

Learn the History Behind July 1

After many discussions, four British colonies decided to unite. On July 1, 1867, the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (Quebec and Ontario) got together to form the Dominion of Canada. This event is known as confederation. Every year, we celebrate the anniversary of confederation or “Dominion Day” on July 1st. This year, Canada Day 2023 will celebrate the 156th anniversary of confederation.

Fun Fact: To this day, Canada’s official name is still “Dominion of Canada.” The complete name is quite wordy though, so we just shorten it to Canada.

Although Canada originally consisted of just four provinces, more British colonies opted to join the Dominion of Canada following confederation. Newfoundland and Labrador was the last province to join Canada in 1949. Canada, as we know it today, became complete with the addition of Nunavut, when it joined as a territory in 1999.

Why is it Called Canada Day?

The holiday on July 1 was not always called Canada Day. Even though Canada became a country in 1867, it did not gain full autonomy and was still under British rule. While July 1 officially became a holiday in 1879, it wasn’t widely celebrated and it certainly wasn’t called Canada Day at the time. It wasn’t until Canada gained complete independence in 1982 that July 1 became Canada Day, the holiday we know and love today.

Canada Day 2023 Celebrations

While Canada Day started as a small and modest holiday, it has evolved into something truly magnificent. Today, Canada Day is one of the most beloved holidays in the country. July 1 has become synonymous with large festivals and vibrant fireworks. Since Canada Day comes right after the school year ends, the holiday marks the unofficial start of the Canadian summer.

Canada Day usually brings many exciting events and festivals with it. From the West Coast in the Pacific to the East Coast in the Atlantic, Canada lights up on July 1. You can be sure that many Canada Day festivals will take place in small towns and large cities around you! Such events may include picnics, bonfires, sporting events, parades, water activities (it’s July), and more delicious food. More importantly, these festivals are a great way to spend time with family and friends and meet new people in your community.

Canada Day festivals generally take place in vast, open spaces such as a large park or a beach. These festivals are enormous and have activities for everyone. Some of the biggest Canada Day celebrations take place on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Since there is ongoing construction on parliament hill that will continue for the next few years, the celebrations aren’t as large this year. Instead, the festivities are spread out across Downtown Ottawa and Gatineau. Still, the area will host some of the biggest and grandest Canada Day celebrations this year.

Is Canada Day 2023 a Statutory Holiday?

The holiday is a national statutory holiday, meaning most employees are legally entitled to take the day off. You will still receive statutory holiday pay, which is the same as a day’s work if you take the day off. If you decide to work on Canada Day, you will receive premium pay, which is 1½ times your regular pay. If you are not scheduled to work on Canada Day, you are entitled to take the next day off while receiving holiday pay.

Canada Day being a statutory holiday also means that all government institutions are closed on that day. Libraries, government offices, banks, and post offices are all examples of services you will find closed on Canada Day.

What if Canada Day Falls on a Weekend?

Canada Day 2023 will fall on a Saturday. If Canada Day falls on a weekend, the holiday will move to the following Monday. That is because Saturday and Sunday are not regular working days for most employees. As a result, Canada Day is bumped to the next weekday. However, some provinces have different policies regarding when Canada Day is celebrated. While all provinces and territories recognize Canada Day as a statutory holiday, not all of them will move Canada Day to a weekday. Some provinces and territories don’t have a rule that shifts Canada to a weekday if July 1 falls on a weekend.

senior immigrant in Canada

Senior immigrants often face significant challenges when settling into Canada. Many struggle with language barriers, mobility issues, and feelings of isolation. They may rely heavily on their adult children who sponsored them to come to Canada, but this can lead to feelings of being taken advantage of, such as being overused for babysitting. Additionally, some may feel disconnected from their children and grandchildren as they adapt to Canadian society.

However, there is good news. Many elderly immigrants find comfort in connecting with others who are in similar positions. They often organize events or meetings tailored to their age group or ethnic background. For instance, in Vancouver, a group of retired Russian people runs a chess club that hosts weekly tournaments. To find similar groups and programs, seniors can turn to their local ethnic newspapers or immigrant settlement agencies. These resources offer a variety of activities, ranging from outdoor outings to weekly dance classes to English lessons.

It is crucial for senior immigrants to actively engage with their community and explore all that Canada has to offer. By doing so, they can enhance their quality of life and find a sense of belonging in their new home.

Shops and restaurants at night in Toronto's Chinatown neighbourhood.

Toronto is the most culturally diverse city in the world reflected in some of it’s unique neighbourhoods. With more than half of its population being born outside of Canada, there are not many ethnicities you won’t find in Toronto. Unsurprisingly, there are ethnic enclaves around the city where Canadians of a certain descent more commonly reside. Many of these neighbourhoods have rich histories, and over time some of them earned nicknames. Toronto has it all, from familiar cultural districts like Chinatown and Little Italy to the more unique ones such as Little Jamaica and Greektown. As a newcomer, Toronto is a great city because you will feel at home. Here are some of the Toronto neighbourhoods that are just as good a tourist destination as a place to live.

Chinatown

Chinatowns are not an unfamiliar concept in North America. Almost every large city in Canada and the United States has a neighbourhood they can call Chinatown. No city, however, does it as well Toronto. Toronto has not one, but three Chinatowns, with many other neighbourhoods that people commonly refer to as Chinatowns.

The main Chinatown and the one Toronto is known for is located around the Dundas St West and Spadina Avenue intersection. This Toronto neighbourhood is the largest Chinatown in North America and one of the oldest in Canada, dating back to the 1870s. Toronto’s Chinatown is famous for its bustling streets and mouth-watering food. Restaurants like Mother’s Dumpling, Dim Sum King, and Mongolian hotpot have been attracting customers for now decades now. At the heart of the bustling neighbourhood lies Chinatown Center, which is a shopping mall containing hundreds of shops.

Even though the biggest Chinatown get most of the attention, there are smaller Toronto neighbourhoods that many classify as Chinatowns. East Chinatown is another Chinatown in Toronto, centred on Gerrard Street East and Broadview Avenue. The Greater Toronto Area also has sizeable Chinatowns in Scarborough, Markham, Mississauga, North York, and Richmond Hill.

Little Italy Neighbourhood

Little Italy is another cliche ethnic neighbourhood that is present in many North American cities. Of course, that means Toronto has one as well. The Toronto neighbourhood of Little Italy, which many refer to as College Street West is famous for its overwhelmingly Italian atmosphere. This Toronto neighbourhood has a significant Portugese-Canadian population as well.

Little Italy is centred on College Street, lying between Harbord Street to the North and Dundas Street to the south. The most iconic part of Toronto’s Little Italy lies on the strip of shops and restaurants along College Street. There, you will find everything from modern game board cafes to traditional Italian dine-in restaurants, as well as a ton of Italian shops. Whether you are looking for a bar or a typical Italian cafe, Little Italy will not disappoint.

Toronto’s Little India Neighbourhood

Little India is a newer Toronto neighbourhood with a very unique origin story behind it. Toronto’s Little India found its origins in 1972 when Gian Naaz purchased a theatre on Gerrard Street and began to screen Indian and Pakistani films. Despite the area not originally having a significant South Asian population, South Asian shops and restaurants quickly began sprouting up near Gerrard Street. This, in turn, drew the community to the Toronto neighbourhood, resulting in a big South Asian population.

Today, Little India, also known as Gerrard India Bazaar, is situated between Greenwood and Coxwell, on Gerrard Street East. Since its humble beginnings 50 years ago, the neighbourhood has turned into a vibrant center of South Asian culture. From Indian restaurants to South Asian superstores, this Toronto neighbourhood can make anyone feel like they are in India.

Greektown on the Danforth

The Danforth and Greektown have become two synonymous words to describe the same Toronto neighbourhood. Toronto is home to one of the largest Greek populations outside Greece, and a majority of that population resides in this Toronto neighbourhood. Located on Danforth Avenue in East Toronto, Greektown on the Danforth is known for featuring traditional Greek cuisine through its many restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.

Taste Of Danforth

Toronto’s Greektown is famous for having one of the largest street food festivals in Toronto. In August, the Toronto neighbourhood hosts The Taste of Danforth. This food festival has become an icon of Greek-Canadian culture and gives Canadians a chance to try out some of the best Greek flavours. Of course, you don’t have to wait till August to try them out. The Danforth is lined with Greek restaurants and shops, ranging from traditional Greek restaurants to modern vegan cafes.

Little Jamaica Neighbourhood

Another ethnic neighbourhood in Toronto is Little Jamaica. Located on Eglinton Avenue West, Little Jamaica is a center of Jamaican and Caribbean culture in the Greater Toronto Area. The ethnic enclave is bustling with Jamaican and Caribbean-owned businesses. From Jamaican hair salons to restaurants serving a range of Caribbean foods, Little Jamaica is definitely worth the visit.

If you live in Toronto, there is a good chance you have been to the Caribana festival, which is the largest street festival in North America. Caribana, the annual festival of all things Caribbean, now takes place at Lakeshore Boulevard. What most people don’t know, however, is that the festival finds its origins in Little Jamaica. Caribana took place on Eglinton Avenue West before it got too big and relocated. At the heart of this Toronto neighbourhood lies Reggae Lane. Reggae Lane has become a symbol of Jamaica in Toronto and presents a mural featuring Jamaican musicians from the neighbourhood.

Portugal Village

Located not far from Little Italy, Portugal Village recreates many aspects of Portuguese and Brazillian culture right here in Toronto. To many, Little Italy and Portugal Village are the same neighbourhood due to their close proximity and undefined boundaries. As a result, Portugal Village, also known as Little Portugal, has a significant Italian population. Portugal Village is always vibrant and busy, having something for everyone. Whether you want to indulge in delicious Portuguese cuisine or just enjoy the unique atmosphere of Portugal Village, this Toronto neighbourhood will not let you down. Portugal Village is brimming with numerous eating options, Portuguese art in every corner, and loads of Portuguese items.

There are countless ethnic enclaves in Toronto, even if many of them are not commonly recognized. In this article, we only discussed some of the most popular ethnic Toronto neighbourhoods. Toronto prides itself on being a home to people from over 250 ethnicities. No matter where you are from as a newcomer, you will never feel out of place in the most culturally diverse city in the world.

Wrapped pink and red Valentine's Day gifts with text that reads celebrating Valentine's Day

With February 14th right around the corner, you may be turning your thoughts to Valentine’s Day gifts. This special day has a rich history that goes back centuries. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, is a holiday where lovers express their affection for each other. The holiday has expanded to include friends and relatives as well. While you may have your own gift ideas and traditions from your country, here’s what’s commonly done in Canada.

On Valentine’s Day, loved ones exchange gifts and greetings. What makes Valentine’s Day different from other holidays is that its main theme revolves around romantic love. Because of this, the colours red and pink, and hearts are a common sight on Valentine’s Day. But even though we call it a holiday, it’s more of a celebration of love as opposed to a public holiday.

This guide will help you pick out the best Valentine’s Day gifts for that special someone. The key to finding the right gift isn’t even in the gift at all. Gifts are a way to convey your love and affection to someone. To find the perfect gift, you need to find something that symbolizes how you feel about that person. Once you know what feelings you want to convey to your loved one, the sky is the limit.

The first two things that come to mind when thinking about Valentine’s Day are hearts and chocolates. Unsurprisingly, combining these two makes for a perfect little gift. One of the most popular gift ideas for Valentine’s Day is a heart-shaped box full of chocolates. This small but meaningful gift symbolizes love and affection for the person you give it to. A box of chocolates is a great gift if you want to show some affection to that special someone.

A Thoughtful Gift: Books

Books are one of the best Valentine’s Day gift ideas out there. Books work especially well if you want to express your feelings but can’t find the courage to say them yourself. What makes books such a great gift is that you can use them to convey any message you want. There are thousands of books out there and there is a high chance you will find multiple books that carry the same message you want to share. You can also get a book for a family member to show how much you care about and appreciate them. The potential is endless if you choose the right book and present it at the right time.

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Gift

If you have decent crafting skills, you can make a Valentine’s Day gift for your loved one! DIY gifts are a great idea for a gift, especially if you know your loved one well. You can make just about anything when it comes to DIY. Be creative. Think about what your loved one will appreciate. No store-bought gift can ever be as personalized and romantic as a gift you make yourself. What’s even better is that DIY gifts will also be much easier on your wallet.

For the hopeless romantics, consider compiling a photo book with memories from your favourite trips together. You can write romantic captions or add quotes from poems or books.

A photo of a couple on bikes along the shoreline of a romantic beach. A photo book can be a great Valentine's Day gift
Creating a photo book of your favourite memories is a romantic Valentine’s Day gift!

Personalized Gifts Ideas

No single gift can take the title of being the best Valentine’s Day gift. The perfect gift depends entirely on the person you are giving it to. If your loved one is a big fan of getting outdoors and staying active, then a bicycle could be a good gift for Valentine’s Day. However, if your loved one prefers staying indoors, a bike probably wouldn’t be the best gift.

Put Some Thought into Your Valentine’s Day Gift

First of all, a gift you find on the internet cannot be thoughtful. For a gift to be thoughtful, you need to put thought into it. If you find a gift online and decide to get it for your loved one, it will probably not be as effective as a gift you thought of yourself. As mentioned earlier, books can be a thoughtful gift if you put thought into them. A random book from a list of “Top 10 Romance Novels”, will not light the same spark as a book you chose yourself.

How Much Should You Spend on a Valentine’s Day Gift?

Your Valentine’s Day gift doesn’t need to be expensive. A common misconception is that the more expensive a gift is, the better it is going to be. Your gift should show that you put thought into the gift.

Your gift doesn’t even need to be tangible. It doesn’t need to be an object to be memorable. It could be an event or a night out at a special place. Again, it should be something that you think your loved one will enjoy. You want to make it memorable. Perhaps a live concert by their favourite artist or a visit to a place that brings back childhood memories. It doesn’t need to be a dinner at the most expensive restaurant you can find.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how expensive your gift was or how much effort you put into getting that gift. It is about how that gift made your loved one feel and how effective it was in conveying your feelings for that person. Once you realize that, finding the right gift is as easy as chocolate. Or maybe the gift is chocolate.

Canada is home to some of the best research-based engineering universities in the world. And, no matter which public university you attend, you will get some of the best education in the world. You’ll also receive a widely recognized degree that many countries accept. Some Canadian universities, however, are known for giving students more in-depth access to their field of study. Below, are some of the top universities in Canada for engineering students.

University of Waterloo

University of Waterloo | Top Canadian University for Engineering

The University of Waterloo (UWaterloo), located in Kitchener-Waterloo, is considered the top university in Canada for engineering. It is internationally recognized for its one-of-a-kind engineering faculty. While it might not be the first university that comes to mind when talking about Canada’s top university, UWaterloo has many reasons that make it the best university for engineering students.

UWaterloo has the best co-op program in North America and give students the upper hand when they enter the workplace. That is because Waterloo’s co-op program allows students to get work experience while still in university. As a bonus, they also earn money during their co-op, which can help to pay off their tuition fees.

While no university guarantees students a co-op placement, UWaterloo students generally have no trouble finding placements in the workplace. This is a great achievement, considering that UWaterloo has the largest engineering department in Canada. UWaterloo also has one of the highest employment rates for its graduates, falling just behind the University of Toronto.

Aerial view of the University of British Columbia.

University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is internationally known for being the center of teaching, learning, and research. It has also been recognized as North America’s most international university. As a result, UBC students receive an education that revolves around research and technology from a top university in Canada for engineering. The university is only a 30-minute bus ride to the heart of downtown Vancouver,

Combined with a great co-op program, UBC graduates generally find jobs quickly after graduating. Co-op students from UBC, especially, have an easy time finding jobs. This is because employers know they have work experience while also receiving an education based on innovation.

At the end of the day, if someone is going to hire you as an engineer, you should have your original ideas in addition to what you are taught in university. UBC is a great university for that because it encourages students to innovate and develop problem-solving skills.

University of Toronto | One of the Top Engineering Universities in Canada

The University of Toronto (UofT) is commonly referred to as Canada’s most prestigious university. It is also one of the top Canadian universities for engineering. The university is often called the Oxford of Canada. No matter which program you enter at UofT, you will find yourself among some of the best professors in Canada. Additionally, your degree will come with rightfully earned respect and recognition of a UofT graduate. The engineering program at UofT is no exception.

Like UBC, UofT’s engineering program revolves heavily around research-based education, combined with traditional lecture-styled classes.

UofT has three campuses, all of which are located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). While the main campus, St. George, is located in downtown Toronto, the university also has campuses in Mississauga and Scarborough.

University of Alberta

The University of Alberta (UofA) is one of the leading institutes when it comes to top Canadian universities for engineering. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the city also has a low cost of living. As a result, if you decide to go to UofA, you will obtain a well-respected degree while managing affordable living expenses.

University of Western Ontario

The University of Western Ontario (Western), located in London, Ontario, has one of Canada’s largest and most scenic campuses. It also has a great engineering faculty. Western is specifically known for exceptional programs in civil and mechanical engineering. This combined with a scenic, accessible, and bustling campus makes Western one of the top picks for international students.

Western is known for having a great student life. The university has many resources that help students balance their studies and social life. These resources help students manage their studies and not get overwhelmed. The university places importance on extracurriculars such as student clubs and intramurals. These factors, combined with a remarkable engineering program make Western one of the top universities in Canada for engineering students.

The Ivey Business School is also located on the Western University campus. It is one of the best business schools in Canada. 96% of Ivey graduates get job offers right away. Additionally, many of them reach high positions in their companies.

Complementing Your Engineering Education with a Business Degree

A common approach to make yourself more desirable to employers is to complement your engineering education with a business degree. This dual degree combination shows employers you possess technical know-how and broader business skills to enhance big-picture thinking. In addition, it can open up unique career options when you apply engineering school technical skills and business leadership, strategy, and communication skills.

A dual degree on your resume can differentiate you from other job candidates. It shows your commitment to achieving educational and career goals. Pursuing a dual degree can also help you grow your professional network by connecting you to other engineers and business professionals. This can help you find exciting opportunities and graduate with many professional contacts and references.

Choosing a Canadian Engineering University as an International Student

No matter which university you attend, you will receive a good education. Canadian universities also provide many opportunities to transition into the workplace upon graduation. At the end of the day, which university you decide to go to depends on your preferences.

Academics is not the only factor to consider when choosing an engineering school in Canada. You will spend four or more years of your life at university. Consider factors such as student life, extracurriculars, and support for international students at your university of choice.

With some of the best universities in Canada for engineering, international students can receive a degree recognized around the world. Graduating from these top universities can offer stellar job prospects and exciting career opportunities.

A yellow traffic sign with text that reads holidays scams ahead. The sign appears over red, green, and blue holiday season lights.

It is always a good idea to be careful when shopping online. Scammers can be waiting to trick you out of your money in even the most unexpected of places. This is especially true for the holiday season. November and December see some of the biggest sales volumes every year. While you might find some great deals online this time of year, scammers are also busy trying to cheat you out of your money. Newcomers unfamiliar with these scams can easily fall prey. Here are some common online holiday season scams and how to avoid them.

Counterfeit Products

While shopping online, you might come across a great product. The product looks attractive in the pictures and the price is way below what you expect the price should be. If this is the case, the product is probably a scam. Scammers will buy cheap, illegitimate products that imitate recognized brands from a supplier. These products pose a threat to your health and safety and are produced with no care for regular consumers. They are then sold online as authentic products to turn a bigger profit.

It is easy to fall for this scam because of the way it is set up. These fake goods will be priced in a way that makes them stand out. However, they usually aren’t cheap enough to make them look suspicious. Many people make the mistake of trusting the product just because the price is reasonable. With the right information and a cautious approach, it is possible to spot and avoid buying counterfeit goods online.

How to Avoid Buying a Counterfeit Product During the Holiday Season

Before you hit the checkout button, it is a good idea to research the seller. The best way to avoid buying counterfeit products is to buy from the company that produces them. For example, if you are buying an iPhone charger online on Amazon, there is a good chance that the charger is counterfeit. To make sure you get an authentic iPhone charger, your best bet is to buy from the Apple online store.

Of course, not all third-party sellers online sell counterfeit goods. Some independent third-party sellers do sell authentic products online. The best way to find the difference between counterfeit and authentic items is to look at the price. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

If you find a product online that looks suspicious and you think it might be a fake, you can report it. To learn how to report a counterfeit product, visit this Canadian Anti-Fraud Center page.

Fake Websites

The internet is filled with fake websites that claim to sell authentic products. Shopping from these sites results in receiving low-quality products or sometimes, not even receiving anything at all.

A good way to identify a fake website is by looking at the URL of the page you are on. The domain name of the website will almost always be the same as the brand name. If you are looking to buy an iPhone charger from Apple, the domain name should be apple.com. If it is not, you are most likely browsing on a fake website that sells counterfeit apple products.

How Newcomers to Canada Can Avoid Rental Scams

Settle in Canada with Confidence and Ease

Holiday Season Gift Scams

One of the best parts of the Canadian holiday season is the exchange of gifts. Canadians like to send gifts to their friends and family during this time of year. Sadly, scammers have found a way to cheat you out of your money here as well.

Drained Gift Cards

In recent years, the practice of buying gift cards online during the holiday season has become common. Gift cards are fast and convenient but also allow you to show a thoughtful gesture to your loved ones. While gift cards are great, it is a good idea to be careful when shopping for gift cards online. Many online gift card vendors are fakes. This means that the gift cards you buy from them will be drained of value and will have no money left in them.

The best and easiest way to avoid this scam is to buy gift cards directly from the company. For example, if you want to buy an online gift card from Best Buy, the best place to do that would be through the Best Buy website. While some outside sources might sell valid gift cards for Best Buy, it is best to play it safe.

Holiday Season Online Cards

Another scam that revolves around holiday gifts is fake online cards. Since the pandemic, many aspects of our lives shifted online. Things like online learning and shopping were common before the pandemic. During the pandemic, we had to find new ways to celebrate the holiday season. So many people will send online cards. However, the card you receive can be from a scammer.

The purpose of these fake cards is to introduce harmful malware such as spyware and ransomware into your device. Scammers can then steal your personal information or lock down your computer to make you pay a ransom. Either way, this is something you want to avoid. The best and simplest way to do that is to be careful when you open any cards. If you do not recognize the person who sent the card, you should think twice before opening it.

Outrageously High Prices

You also need to look out for prices that are too high for the product you want to buy. Scammers will target people that do not know the market price of a product to turn a bigger profit. Even though many people wouldn’t consider this a scam, it’s a very real way for scammers to cheat you out of your money.

This is probably the easiest scam to avoid as you just have to know the market price for that product. If you want to buy an iPhone charger, do some research on how much they sell for. That way, you will know whether or not the seller is pricing the charger too high. Knowing the market price will also tell you if the charger is too cheap, which could suggest that the charger is a counterfeit product.

This overview of online shopping scams gives you an idea of what techniques scammers use against you. There are countless other scams you will find during the holiday season and they cannot all be covered in a single article. The best way to avoid any scam online is to be cautious of what you are about to click. As long as you know what you are doing on the internet, online holiday season scams will become easy to spot and avoid.

If you’re a newcomer thinking about buying a new car in Canada, the auto market offers a wide range of vehicles to meet different financial situations, lifestyles, and driving habits. If you’re in Canada from a country with a smaller auto market and fewer choices, this can be daunting as you begin your search. Buying a new car is often the second most expensive purchase after buying a home. So it’s worth it to do some research to determine what kind of vehicle will suit your needs.

But before you buy a new car, it’s a good idea to consider if you even need a new car. Most large cities like Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton have extensive public transit systems. Public transit allows you to move about cost-effectively and conveniently. Or you can even consider buying a used car. However, if you still want to buy a new car here are some important things to do and think about.

Do Your Research Before Buying a Car

Talk to people who own the make and model of the car that you are interested in buying. That way you can get first-hand knowledge about their experience. Their insights about reliability, repair costs, and gas mileage can be helpful information that can save you money. Also, don’t be invested in brand loyalty too heavily as the quality gap between domestic and import brands has narrowed in recent years.

You can also research Canadian automotive websites that are full of reviews and road tests for all types of vehicles. Specific factors to research include:

Be sure to evaluate how the car you want to buy compares to the competition’s price.

Know How the Pricing System Works

Before buying a new car it’s worth knowing how you can get the best price for your new vehicle. Here it’s important to the difference between the suggested retail price (SRP) and the dealer invoice price.

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MRSP):

The MRSP is also commonly known as the list price or “window sticker” price. This is the price point that new car dealers work from. In many cases, you can negotiate a lower cost. However, if the car is in high demand, it may sell for more.

Dealer Invoice Price:

This is the actual price the dealer pays the manufacturer for the vehicle. And there is usually some variance. The price margin is important as it tells the new car buyer how much profit the car dealer can make on the sale of the car and help you negotiate a lower price.

Rebates, Incentives, and Special Offers:

Car dealers commonly offer special promotions, factory/dealer rebates, and other incentives to increase car sales. Find out when manufacturers and dealers offer these programs before buying a car as you could make big savings.

[cjtoolbox name=’Arrive In Canada Financially Prepared’]

The Best Time to Buy a Car

There are different Canadian automotive websites that show what manufacturers and dealers are offering incentives and for what models. Also, some good times to look for and buy a new car include:

Car dealers will offer other incentives to new car buyers such as no interest payments, low financing rates, attractive leasing rates, and cash rebates.

Take a Test Drive Before You Buy a Car

Before you buy a car, it’s important to take a test drive. The car dealership will allow you to take a half-hour test ride on urban and highway roads so you can get an idea of how the vehicle drives and feels. If a spouse will drive the car, ensure they come along for the ride to use the controls, explore the features and evaluate the vehicle. . You can also bring the family to test out the back seat room!

Another helpful way to take a test drive is to rent the make and model you’re considering buying. That way, you can drive the car for a longer period of time to experience the car and its benefits. Or, you may discover that the vehicle doesn’t meet your needs. Either way, a test drive is an important first step to take before buying a car.

To Lease or Buy a Car

When buying a car, you have two types of financial agreements to consider: buy or lease a vehicle.

Whether you choose to lease or buy a car, you’ll have a monthly, weekly, or bi-weekly car payment for a few years, unless you pay cash. Typically, most car-buyers put down a deposit on a car and get a loan from a bank to buy it. In which case, you’ll also have to pay interest on the loan.
.
The other option is to lease a car. When you lease, you don’t own the car. You are essentially renting it for a specific period. At the end of the lease term, you will have the option to return the vehicle, trade it in for a newer model, or buy it out.

With a lease, instead of borrowing the full purchase price of the car, you are only borrowing the amount the car will depreciate over the term of the lease. For example with a three-year lease, and taking into account regular wear and tear (known as the “residual value”), then you only have to finance the difference between the purchase price and the residual value.  This is the basic reason lease payments are lower than loan payments.

Pros and Cons of Leasing vs. Buying a Car

Both leasing or buying a car has pros and cons. When you buy a car, you own the car at the end of the payment period – you own the car fully and it has some residual value and equity. The cons are that payments are more expensive than leasing and once the vehicle is out of its warranty period you are responsible for maintenance and repair costs.

When you lease a car, you have lower car payments and better cash flow. And since car leases are generally between two and three years, the vehicle you buy is almost always going to be covered by warranties.  Once the lease is up, you can either walk away or upgrade to a newer model. However, unless you negotiate to buy the car at the end of its lease you will never really own the vehicle and will not build equity.

When Does Leasing Make Sense?

Deciding to lease or buy a car in Canada can be a difficult decision. Basically, you have to decide what option makes sense given your financial situation, individual, or family lifestyle. Here are some things to know about leasing:

Carefully evaluating your driving habits and your car needs will help you to make the decision the lease or buy a car.

Payment Options When Buying a Car

You have a few ways you can pay for your vehicle when you buy a car in Canada:

Cash: You pay the full amount upfront to the dealership or private seller.

Financing from the car dealer: Financing and payment options are readily available from auto dealers through their financing company.  However, you may face challenges getting approval if you don’t have an established credit history

Bank loans or line of credit: You can apply for financial aid through your bank or credit union. Most banks have programs in place to help newcomers get a car loan with little or no credit.

Do the math to figure out which option makes the most financial sense.

Making the Deal to Buy a Car

If the test drive goes well and you’re ready to buy a car, ensure you use all the information you researched to work out a fair price. The price should take into account any factory and dealer rebates, discounts, and incentives. It is a good idea to have this information in a report to use as a negotiating tool when dealing with a salesperson. This can be the most difficult stage of buying a car since car dealers want to get the suggested retail price. So, at a minimum, you should know what price the dealer paid the factory for the car and what rebates are available to them.

Your solid research can help you to negotiate the best price and save you hundreds or thousands of dollars on the new car price. The art of the deal is to allow the dealer to make some profit, but not all at your expense.

During the buying stage, the cost of the car can go much higher when the salesperson tries to sell dealer-installed extras such as:

In most cases, these are high-margin profit items for the dealer that reduce any cost-savings you negotiate. These are added profits that only come out of your wallet. And most of these extras aren’t necessary. If there are options that you want to purchase, it will drive up the price of your car. So, try to negotiate the price on the options as well. Or, you can also add options at a later date from other places outside of the dealership at a reduced price.

Negotiation Tips When Buying a Car

Remember as the buyer with money to spend you have the upper hand. Dealerships don’t want to lose a sale and will try their best to win and keep your future business. So keep these tips in mind when negotiating price:

Other Factors to Consider Before You Buy a Car in Canada

One of the first things new immigrants want to establish when they move to Canada is somewhere they can call home. Your ability to buy a home and qualify for a mortgage is tied together if you do not have the funds to purchase a property outright.

You will need to meet certain financial criteria as set out by Canadian banks and financial institutions. This may seem intimidating and even challenging, largely because of misconceptions.

There is a belief that newcomers cannot get a mortgage from a Canadian bank, they won’t qualify if they don’t have a strong credit history or they won’t qualify until they have a couple of years of employment history in Canada. These are not true.

There are many immigrants who qualify for mortgages every day. In fact, did you know that 18% of mortgage consumers are newcomers to Canada?

Requirements for Newcomers to Qualify for a Mortgage

Financing is available to both permanent and non-permanent residents. However, qualifying for a mortgage will depend on your status. Here is an overview of mortgage requirements:

Permanent Resident Mortgage Requirements

As a permanent resident, you will have access to a variety of mortgages and programs. You could qualify for a standard mortgage if you have a good credit rating. This means one of the applicants must have a credit score of 680 or higher. You will also require at least a 5% down payment.

If you do not have a good credit score, you can still qualify for a mortgage through a newcomer to Canada program. You will still require a minimum 5% down payment.

If you are paying less than 20% of the cost of the purchase price, you will have to get mortgage loan insurance

With a good credit rating, you could qualify for a standard mortgage. If you do not have established credit in Canada, you may have to get a letter of reference from your financial institution from your country of origin. You will need to qualify under a new to Canada program.

You will not qualify for a mortgage if you are not a permanent resident, have poor credit, and do not have at least a 10% down payment.

What Lenders Review When Qualifying for a Mortgage

Your Income:

When applying for a mortgage, a lender will review your income. This can be from many sources as long as the income is plausible, such as income from full or part-time employment, self-employment, rental properties, support or alimony payments, or pensions.

The lender will require a letter from your full or part-time employer to confirm income, especially if you have had the job for less than two years. You should have copies of your last two year’s tax returns and be up-to-date with any outstanding taxes.

Your Debt:

The lender will also look at your debts, including your proposed house payment, as well as monthly payments for loans, credit cards, car leases or child support. It is important that you include all debts you have on your mortgage application as they can impact your ability to borrow.

Your Employment History:

Evidence of regular income is another critical factor lenders consider. They are more inclined to favor applicants who have worked at one job continuously for several years or have remained in the same field. However, you can still qualify for a mortgage if you’ve changed jobs recently as long as your new employer can prove your income with a Letter of Employment to confirm your:

They may also ask for recent pay stubs to confirm your rate of pay.

If you’re self-employed or have worked at a job for less than two years, lenders may ask for additional information, such as federal income tax statements, to verify your income.

Your Credit History:

To qualify for a mortgage, a good credit rating is essential. In addition to reviewing your debt and income, a lender will also pull your credit report. The report details your payment history and how you’ve handled your past obligations. You can get a copy of your credit report before you apply for a mortgage to veryify its accuracy or correct any errors before you apply for a mortgage. However, each credit “pull” will negatively impact your credit score for a short period of time, so avoid pulling your credit too often.

Tips To Qualify for a Mortgage In Canada

Qualifying for a mortgage ensures that you meet certain criteria set out by lenders. Here are the main steps you will need to take to qualify:

Save for a Down Payment to Qualify for a Mortgage:

You will have to put money down on any mortgage. The more you save, the better position you will be in to qualify for a mortgage.

Establish Credit in Canada:

As soon as you arrive in Canada, its important to start building your credit history. A strong score will not only help you qualify for a mortgage, but it will also help you get a better rate. You can do this by paying your bills in full each month, use and pay off your credit cards, and maintain a consistent source of employment income.

Have Proof of your Financial Situation to Qualify for a Mortgage:

Lenders want to see proof of a stable financial situation. To do this, you can get a letter of reference from your financial institution, an employment letter from your employers, and show copies of recent pay stubs.

Shop Around:

There are plenty of mortgage options. You can choose from traditional banks, to credit unions, and private lenders. You can also enlist the services of a mortgage broker to help you qualify. Brokers work for you, and they will shop around and compare options for you. They can be a big help to find the right mortgage for your specific needs.

Getting a Pre-approved Mortgage? 4 Tips to Consider

A pre-approved mortgage indicates how how much mortgage you can afford and guarantees a mortgage rate (usually for 90 – 120 days) while you look for a home.

A pre-approved mortgage can give you more credibility to sellers and real estate agents, And in bidding wars, common in hot housing markets, it can give you an advantage against competing home buyers. However, be sure to consider these tips:

1. Know the Difference: Pre-qualified versus Pre-approved

Understand the difference between pre-qualification and pre-approval. For example, pre-qualification is less formal and confirms that you meet general lending guidelines. And sometimes you can obtain a pre-qualification over the phone or through an online assessment.

On the other hand, a pre-approval is a detailed process and takes more time to complete. You need to complete a mortgage application and provide documents to verify things such as your income, debt, employment, and credit history.

A lender will review your application before they pre-approve you.

2. Watch Your Finances after Pre-approval

Don’t let your guard down after you get pre-approved for a mortgage. Missing or skipping credit card payments, increasing debt, or changing jobs could void your pre-approval.

3. Reset Pre-approval Rates

If rates remain low and you’re still searching for a home, you can reset your pre-approval every 45-75 days. Doing so will not only extend your rate hold but will safeguard you against any mortgage rate hikes before you close. Although, some lenders may restrict rate resets.

4. Know the Pre-approval Terms

Shop around and choose pre-approval terms that offer you the most benefits. For example, opt for the longest rate hold (120 days), and other mortgage features such as the ability to make prepayments, fair penalties, and refinancing options.

Qualifying for a mortgage can be an intimidating process, but it does not have to be this way. There are countless ways for newcomers to get approved for a mortgage. It happens every day. You just need to know the steps and understand the financial criteria you need to meet to qualify. Start working toward qualifying from the day you move to Canada, and you will be a homeowner sooner than you think.
